STORY BEHIND BELIEF

Barbarik also known as Khatushyamji, is a legendary figure from Hindu mythology. He is believed to be the grandson of Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers from the epic Mahabharata. The story of Barbarik is filled with valor, devotion and supernatural abilities.

According to the legend, Barbarik was born to Ghatotkacha, the son of Bhima, and his wife Ahilawati. From a young age, Barbarik displayed exceptional prowess in archery and combat. His natural skills were further enhanced by his mother’s blessings, who was a manifestation of Goddess Yogmaya. Barbarik possessed three divine arrows, given to him by Lord Shiva himself. These arrows had extraordinary powers. The first arrow was called “Saarvakal,” which could mark and simultaneously strike all the targets on a battlefield. The second arrow was known as “Sarvahit,” which could cause immense destruction and defeat any opponent. The third arrow was the “Sanhar,” capable of destroying the entire universe if used.As Barbarik grew older, his desire to witness the great Kurukshetra war between the Pandavas and the Kauravas intensified. He wished to fight alongside the Pandavas but was faced with a dilemma. Barbarik possessed a unique ability called “Teen Baan,” which allowed him to simultaneously fire arrows from all three of his bows. However, using this ability came with a condition:

Once Barbarik began the Teen Baan, he would not be able to stop until all his targets were annihilated. To resolve his dilemma, Barbarik sought the guidance of Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Krishna, being aware of Barbarik’s exceptional abilities and the potential threat he posed to the war’s balance, devised a test. Disguised as a Brahmin, Krishna approached Barbarik and asked for his head in charity. To the amazement of Krishna, Barbarik agreed without hesitation. He believed that since his whole body was devoted to Lord Krishna, he could willingly offer any part of it. Barbarik placed his head on a platter and was about to behead himself when Krishna stopped him. Pleased with his selflessness and devotion, Krishna granted Barbarik a boon. Barbarik requested that he be allowed to watch the entire war unfold. Krishna granted his wish and Barbarik’s severed head was placed on a hilltop overlooking the battlefield. From there, Barbarik witnessed the intense battles between the Pandavas and the Kauravas. The Kurukshetra war ended with the victory of the Pandavas, and after the war, Krishna returned Barbarik’s head to his body. Impressed by Barbarik’s unwavering devotion and his commitment to dharma, Krishna blessed him with eternal fame and worship. Barbarik’s head was enshrined in the village of Khatushyamji in Rajasthan, India, where he is revered as a deity to this day. The story of Barbarik represents devotion, sacrifice, and the power of selflessness. He remains a revered figure in Hindu mythology, inspiring people with his extraordinary abilities and unwavering faith.
